BLACK SEA SONGS
The creative Belgian clarinetist Joachim Badenhorst joins the Amsterdam based duo Sanem Kalfa & George Dumitriu for an intense exploration of traditional Black Sea songs from Turkey geographic region. The flavours of old Ottoman melodies are presented with an original contemporary language and fresh nuances of electronics and open improvisations.
The project presents the unique aspect of the musical cultural region of Dobrogea and the Romanian side of the Black Sea, where a rich variety of cultures interchange.
Winner of Montreux Jazz Competition, Sanem Kalfa sings in dialog portrayed with Romanian poly instrumentalist and composer George Dumitriu, active in the jazz, contemporary classical and improvised music scenes of Europe. The duo is known for building intimate and intense performances on unique sonics, fusing jazz and improvisation mastery with influences of art-pop, electronics, and the most fragile expression of musicality.
Guest musician Joachim Badenhorst, “…one of the most important European jazz musicians at the moment” (Jazzflits), has been active in the experimental and improvised music scene in Europe and abroad for the past 15 years, and is artistically interested in integrating ideas from various different art media into musical compositions. Badenhorst contemplates the evanescent site specificity of sound as well as the relation between space and sound. He delves into a re¬imagination of the boundaries between improvisation and composition, of abstract sound explorations and harmonic passage, and continues to attempt at a personal aesthetic language that interact with spaces and engage with different audiences. In Black Sea Songs, the trio will reveal the inherent relation between contemporary and traditional musics.
Joachim Badenhorst (BE) – clarinet, electronics | Sanem Kalfa – (TU/NL) – vocals, electronics | George Dumitriu (RO/NL) – viola, guitar, effects
KASH KILLION SOLO
Kash Killion is a San Francisco based cellist, bassist, sarangist, vocalist, and composer, who stretches the boundaries of what one would expect from string instruments. He strives to put the string instruments in unusual situations and play any style of music and make it sound authentic. Kash has played extensively with musical icons such as B.B. King, Cecil Taylor, John Zorn, and Butch Morris.
Kash performs solo in the Space is the Place Series in de Ruimte // Amsterdam before he tours the UK with The Sun Ra Arkestra.
MARCO BAGGIANI SOLO
This highly multifaceted drummer is going to put his multifaceted self in a multifaceted solo, one 30-minute set of multifaceted improvised music.
The evolved dynamic of a musician fully-engaged and beyond thought, sometimes playing as a single instrument, sometimes as a duo or even a trio with himself. Expect a performance that blurs the lines between the expected lines and the unexpected ones. Would you try to dance on it? You are more than welcome, would you twist and shout?
“Drummer Marcos Baggiani is a fine mischief-maker whose surprising ideas often steer the music into unexpected new directions” Tim Sprangers – Volkskrant
